    Year 2

    Autumn 1

    Topic - Let's Celebrate
Our first IPC topic sees the children learning all about celebrations. On our launch day the children will come to school dressed in their party clothes and take part in traditional party activities. In History the children will share celebrations they have been to as well as order a variety of celebrations chronologically. They will also learn why we celebrate Bonfire Night. In Art the focus will be the use of Mehndi in Muslim celebrations with the children will designing and painting their own Mehndi patterns. For DT the children will learn about the Rio carnival before designing, making and evaluating their own carnival headdress which they will wear when they perform their Rio carnival dance.

    Science mini-topic - Electricity
Using simple equipment the children create their own circuit, including a switch, to light a bulb, which they add to a model light house. They then investigate electrical conductors and insulators by adding a variety of materials into their circuit.

Topic - Dressing Up - Clothes
In Autumn 2 we will be ‘Dressing Up'. On our launch day the children will visit the ‘Woodhouse Travel Agency' where they will be issued with passports and tickets to visit five countries from around the world (Spain, India, Brazil, Egypt and Russia). In Geography the children will learn about the similarities and differences between the clothes, work and lifestyles in the five different localities. They will also make a weather report from one of the countries and link this to the types of jobs people do. We will continue to look at materials in Science, but will extend our learning to think about good insulating fabrics. In DT the children will become weavers using different fabrics to create a simple weaving pattern and in Art we will be creating sculptures based on the work of Andy Goldsworthy. This links to our class trip to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

    ICT
As well as using ICT within topic lessons, the children will build on their experiences in Y1 by programming a ‘Roamer' robot to move between 2 points. This unit will complement their work on instructions in Literacy and directions in Numeracy. We will also be applying our ICT skills through our topic work using a video camera to film a weather report and the programme Photostory to identify clothes, weather, crops and jobs from the five countries.

    RE
In RE we will be covering the topic ‘Special Places' and learning about the church and the mosque and why they are special.

    PE
During indoor PE the children will complete a ‘Dance' unit of work linked to our IPC topic ‘Let's Celebrate'. They will listen to music of different speeds and perform appropriate moves as well as think about the different levels on which they can move (low, medium, high). Finally they will choreograph a dance suitable for the Rio Carnival which they will perform for the rest of the school. When working outside they will practise their games skills learning how to use equipment such as balls, bats, hoops and bean bags to improve their co-ordination and invent simple games.

    Music
Our focus this term is ‘Long and Short' sounds. This includes sorting musical instruments according to whether they make long or short sounds, identifying long and short sounds in songs and using pictures to represent them. Towards the latter half of the term, our music lessons will concentrate on our Christmas Nativity.

    P.S.H.C.E.
Our values for this term are Be Bold - Aim High and Be Caring - Take Responsibility. In Be Bold we are setting class targets and have created a class promise around the 5 Investors in Pupils areas: Induction, Behaviour, Attendance, Classroom Management and Learning. In Be Caring the children will participate in a whole school project where they have to work with another class to design, make and sell a product to the other children. They will have to take into consideration the cost to make their product, including interest rates to borrow the money from school, as well as how to make the most profit.
