    Year 1

    Autumn 1

    Topic - Holidays
During the course of the half term, our learning in each of the Foundation Subjects will centre around the holiday theme. In Geography, we will find out about places that people visit, different types of transport that are used and activities that people take part in whilst on holiday. In History, we will learn about how holidays have changed during the last hundred years. In Art, we will use the work of Georges Seurat as a basis to create our own holiday themed paintings.

    Topic - Light and Dark
In Autumn 2, we will begin our new topic ‘Light and Dark'. In Art, the children will explore how artists have tried to show light and dark within their paintings. Using these, we will then create our own light and dark paintings, replicating the techniques used by Vincent Van Gogh.

In Geography, Year 1 will find out about how it can be dark in one country and light in another at the same time. The children will learn about countries that have very long summer days and long winter nights.
In Music, we will consider how composers have been inspired by thinking about day and night. The children will then use tuned and un-tuned instruments to create their own ‘light and dark' compositions.

In Science, the children will investigate light sources, as well as the role of light in plant growth.

    ICT
In the Autumn term, our ICT is skills based. The children learn to log-on to the school network, as well as learning basic mouse skills. We will be using our new school iPads to take photos and videos, create stories and record our voices.

    RE
Our RE topic this term is ‘Special People'. We begin by thinking about people who are special to us and consider the reasons why they are special. This then leads us on to find out about people who are special to Christians and Muslims. We think about leaders of religious communities in the church or mosque and then learn about Jesus and the prophet Muhammad, important figures in the Christian and Islamic faiths.

    PE
During indoor PE the children will complete a ‘Gymnastics' unit of work which will develop short sequences of movements, focusing on ‘high and low' and ‘narrow and wide'. After half term we will move onto ‘Dance' when we will use different percussion instruments and pieces of music to accompany the development of dance sequences, focussing on different ways of travelling.

    Music
Our focus this term is ‘Feeling the pulse.' We are learning how to listen and play the pulse in a variety of different music. We are working together to sing songs, chant and rhymes. We will be learning how to play rhythms and begin to think about how to write the rhythms down.

    P.S.H.C.E.
Our values for this term are Be Bold-Aim High and Be Creative. In Be Bold we are setting class and individual targets and making a class induction booklet for new children. In our Be Creative value, we will be joining in with an exciting whole-school project - we look forward to letting you in on the secret in the near future!
