Activities for week commencing - 6 January 2014
Category: NewsLiteracy
Quests will be our focus in Literacy. The children will be watching, reading and writing their own Quest stories. This unit is excellent for engaging with the children as it allows for writing to be adventurous, dangerous and exciting. Using precise adjectives for description, a variety of sentence openers and connectives to link sentences will be on-going throughout their work. Remember, you can help your child by reading any of the Beast Quest books or watching Merlin, Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter.
Our spelling focus will be' the past tense'.
Numeracy
Block D1 and E1 will be our main teaching focus before preparing the children for their December assessments. Teaching multiplication and division on a number line will introduce new concepts to the children. Fractions of shape and number, telling the time on an analogue clock and creating and measures will also be taught. Our mental maths focus will be the 2. 5. 10, 3 and 4 times tables. The children will continue to work on their individual target
IPC: Airports
We will be focussing on Geography, D.T. and Art. The children will find out about the jobs in an airport, maps and airport symbols, climate and adaptations of airports in different countries.
They will research airline logos and livery patterns and create their own airline brand. Finally they will explore travel games and will design, make and evaluate their own airport travel game.
SCIENCE
Through two additional Science mini-topics, we will explore the use of electricity through investigations and will also look at how day and night is linked to the Earth and the Sun.
ICT
Following our trip to Manchester Airport, the children will create a video recount of their trip using sound and visual prompts. They will then create an interactive map of Manchester Airport. The children will also create their own airline ticket using Microsoft word.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Indoor
Through dance, the children will be creating their own fitness DVD which will be later presented to the Year 1 children to copy. The children will work in groups to design and refine their own routine, focussing on different levels and using their understanding of rhythm to keep in time with the beat. We will upload their videos onto the VLE once they are complete.
Games
In outdoor lesson, children will continue to consolidate and develop skills for net and court games. This will involve travelling with, passing and aiming with balls, and using bats and balls. Individual skills will be practised and co-operative and competitive games played in small groups.
MUSIC
We will be exploring songs about travelling in unison and in parts and working in groups to create accompaniments. We will also be creating our own jingle to use in our ‘Airport radio station'.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
‘New Beginnings' continues to be the focus for this half term with the children continuing to study how these are celebrated in both the Hindu and Christian faith.
PERSONAL/SOCIAL/HEALTH
EDUCATION.
Be Caring, Take Responsibility is our value. We will be looking at money and asking questions such as ‘Can we afford it?' ‘Where does our money come from?' and ‘How much do things cost around the world?' We will also be working with our buddy classes to create an item to sell in the Market Place next half term.
